Climate Innovation Unveiled: Highlights from DEVCON's 15th Year Summit

The premier volunteer tech organization in the nation, DEVCON, celebrated its 15th anniversary on June 29 and 30, at a two-day tech symposium hosted at the SMX Convention Center in Lanang, Davao City, Mindanao. The move in strategy to assist local IT ecosystems is a reflection of DEVCON's dedication to a digitally transformed Philippines for all.

A commitment to inclusive innovation

"This year's decision to support and host a major summit in Mindanao wasn't just about location," emphasized Dom De Leon, DEVCON's Executive Director. "It reflects DEVCON’s intention to empower regional tech leaders and bring the best of global technology and inspiration that's most relevant to Mindanao."

The summit honored Bukidnon as the organization's tenth local chapter and marked DEVCON's fifteenth anniversary. This action highlights DEVCON's commitment to promoting inclusive innovation throughout the nation and recognizes the concentration of tech-related events and opportunities in Metro Manila.

The two-day DEVCON Mindanao Summit provided an extensive program aimed at empowering local talent. In addition to taking part in breakout sessions and learning more about the newest tech employment opportunities at the exhibitors' area, attendees also saw a startup pitch competition and locally relevant tech awards recognition, as well as learning from worldwide professionals on the main stage.

"With the help of our partners and sponsors, we’re showcasing the best of Mindanao and bringing the best to Mindanao," said DEVCON Davao Chapter President and Mindanao Programs co-lead Peng Sumarago. "This event creates a movement that showcases the innovations and opportunities in Mindanao," she added.

DEVCON launched a ground-breaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), further demonstrating their dedication to innovation. With this historic agreement, DEVCON's nationwide volunteer and tech expert network will be utilized to work together on climate-resilient technologies.

“Despite the many initiatives that we have done in DOST, we have so many ideas that can be done, but we need developers,” DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. commented on the partnership. “People who have other perspectives and ideas can accelerate our efforts and implement things faster. We need developers with fresh perspectives to accelerate our efforts,” he added.

This alliance represents a strong scientific and technological partnership with the goal of creating a community that addresses major climate issues in the Philippines.

15 years and beyond

The celebration of DEVCON's 15th anniversary has turned out to be a historic event. The DOST cooperation ushers in a new era in climate innovation, while the carefully crafted Mindanao summit program represents an inclusive approach to developing tech talent. Through this cooperative endeavor, DEVCON is positioned to play a pivotal role in empowering tech leaders in the Philippines and addressing the pressing issue of climate change.

"We will start building innovation to combat climate change," said DEVCON Founder Winston L. Damarillo. "The Philippines has a stake in making this work," he added.
